Use Your BPI US Dollar Account to Pay Bills in Pesos

Question from an Overseas Pinoy:
I will soon move back to the Philippines and will travel to nearby countries. Can I open a US dollar account there to which I can deposit my US dollar checks and then pay my rent and bills in pesos online?

Answer:
All the US dollar accounts here that I know may NOT be used to directly pay bills in pesos online.

What you can consider is opening a BPI US dollar atm account and a BPI peso atm account and using the BPI Direct Online FX service.

How to Use Your BPI US Dollar Account to Pay Bills in Pesos:

1.  Enroll both your BPI US dollar atm account and BPI peso atm account in BPI Express Online.

2.   Activate your BPI Express Online.
Activate using your atm card, if you're in the Philippines.
Activate using mail and email, if you're outside the Philippines.

3.  Login to your BPI Express Online account.

4.  Mouse over Funds Transfer,
     then Dollar to Peso Transfer
     and click Transfer Now

5.   Choose your US dollar account
        and your Peso account

6.  Enter the amount to be changed to US dollars.
The amount in pesos will appear.

7.  Review data entered, then click Submit.

8.  Your transaction will be confirmed
and you will receive an email confirmation.

9.  In real time, your US dollar account will be debited the dollar amount
and your peso account will be credited the peso amount.

10.  You can then use your peso account to pay your bills.
        Mouse over Payments & Reloading,
          then Bills Payment
          then Pay Bills Today.
          Click Enroll Bills
You can start paying your bills immediately after enrollment.

Remember these:
. You can use this Dollar to Peso Transfer only during Philippine trading hours from
9:30 AM to 3:30 PM Philippine Time,
      from Monday to Friday only.
No dollar-to-peso transfer during weekends and Philippine holidays.

. After you click Submit, you can no longer cancel your transaction.

. This service does NOT convert pesos into US dollars.

. You can use US dollar savings and peso savings or checking accounts
        opened with:
        Bank of Philippine Islands (BPI)
        or BPI Family Savings Bank
        or BPI Direct Savings Bank.

Where to Change 100 Baisa to Peso, also Omani Rial

We have been receiving lots of inquiries about where to change 100 baisa to Philippine peso so I researched about it.

100 baisa is the smallest banknote of Oman in value.

The money of Oman is called OMANI RIAL and its units are called baisa.

Merong 100 baisa na papel, meron ding 100 baisa na coin. The other coins are 5 baisa, 10 baisa, 25 baisa and 50 baisa.

1 Omani Rial = 1,000 baisa

This means 100 baisa is only one-tenth of 1 Omani Rial.

Sad to say, I found out that NO Money Changer in the Philippines is changing 100 baisa.
Siempre, napakaliit nga naman ng value. It is not profitable for a money changer to change 100 baisa.

Maybe the volume of Omani rials being exchanged in the Philippines is so small that changing Omani rial is not profitable for money changers here. Czarina, Sanry's and the others are not changing Omani rials.

Based on foreign exchange calculators online:

1 Omani Rial = 116 pesos ( more or less)

but on the website of Naila's Money Changer, the exchange rate is:

1 Omani Rial = 70 pesos

and because 1 Omani Rial = 1,000 baisa

1,000 baisa = 70 pesos

and

100 baisa = 7 pesos

7 pesos!

UPDATE as of June 27, 2016:
I saw on the Facebook page of Ans Money Changer that their exchange rate for Omani Rial is much higher than that of Naila's Money Changer.

1 Oman Riyal = 99 pesos

May Nagpapalit ba ng old Turkish Lira sa Philippines?

Change Old Turkish Lira to Peso

Old Turkish liras or old Turk Lirasi banknotes with lots of zeros NO LONGER have VALUE.

They were demonetized in 2005.

These old Turkish liras were demonetized in 2005 after Turkey suffered years of hyperinflation and decided to remove lots of zeros from its banknotes and redenominated them.

In 2005, the one-million banknote became only one lira.

The biggest banknote in value  is 200 Turk Lirasi.

The following old Turkish Lira banknotes are OBSOLETE and no longer in circulation:

100000 Turk Lirasi   or  100,000  Turkish Liras
250000                      or  250,000
500000                      or  500,000
1000000                    or  1 Million
5000000                    or  5 Million
10000000                  or  10 Million
20000000                  or  20 Million

The biggest Turkish Lira banknote in value now is 200 Turk Lirasi.

At present, the Turk Lirasi banknotes are:

           5
          10
          20
          50
          100
          200

Why Is There Only a Few Money Changers Changing Omani Rial?
The volume of Omani rials circulating in the Philippines might not be big enough for it to be profitable for money changers to deal with Omani rials.

Maybe because there are not many OFWs sending Omani rials to the Philippines.  Maybe most of OFWs in Oman are converting their Omani rials in Oman before sending them to the Philippines. Maybe many of them bring home US dollars instead of Omani rials.

Based on BSP data on OFW remittances from January to April 2016, Oman was 4th among Middle East countries in total amount of OFW remittances tracked:

Saudi Arabia    $890.29 M
UAE                 $637.80 M
Qatar                $307.17 M
Kuwait             $300.61 M
Oman               $152.49 M

Check Clearing on the Same Day

One-Day Check Clearing for Local or Regional Checks. Will it happen soon? Will cheques soon clear on the same day it is presented to the bank?

It is expected, the BSP announced on its website. It announced that electronic check clearing will start on January 1, 2017. This means that checks will no longer be physically delivered to the paying bank. Instead, a digital image of the check will be sent online to the paying bank through the Check Image Clearing System of the PCHC*.

This is why the new design of checks is now like this:

3 changes:

1.  Smaller in size. Width now only 8 inches.
2.  The  amount portion is now boxed.
3.  There's a waiver -- those words in small letters.
      The waiver says:
I/We allow the electronic clearing of this check and hereby waive the presentation for payment of the original to XYZ Bank.

Be reminded again that your check should have:
                . No erasure
                . No alteration
                . Complete information
                      Date
                      Name of payee
                      Amount in figures
                      Amount in words
                      Signature

What happens to the honored original physical check?
The original physical check will NOT be returned to the issuer or drawee bank. It will stay with the collecting or depository bank (where the check was deposited) for a period of 6 months.

What happens now to a returned check or bounced check?
The original physical check, with the reason for return stamped on it, will be returned to the payee by his/her bank. It also includes information on whether the check is good for re-clearing/redeposit or not.

Can the issuer ever see his honored original physical check again?
Yes, but only within 6 months from clearing date. And most likely a not-cheap fee will be charged because both the depository bank and the collecting bank will be involved.

After 6 months, most likely the original physical check will be shredded, kasi sabi nila, after 6 months, only the digital image will be available for viewing upon request.

Not All Banks
Sadly, there will be some banks that will not yet be able to participate in the Check Image Clearing System come January 2017.

*PCHC is the Philippine Clearing House Corp. (PCHC).  It will implement the electronic check clearing system through its Check Image Clearing System (CICS).

Glossary:
Payee -- to whom the check was issued; person or organization being paid

or Paying bank

Depository bank -- bank of the payee; where the check was deposited

Security Bank Fast Track Secured Credit Card

If you don't have income documents to apply for a regular credit card, here's another secured credit card -- the Security Bank Fast Track Secured Credit Card. It's a MasterCard credit card.

This is offered to both existing Security Bank clients and applicants who are not yet clients of the bank.

What's a secured credit card?
You give a collateral to the bank to secure your credit card. You'll deposit an amount of money that the bank can use to pay your credit card debt in case you're not able to pay your debt.

Dedeposit pala, eh uutang nga eh. Bakit pa ako kukuha ng secured credit card?
You apply for a secured credit card because you need a credit card, but you're not yet qualified to apply for a secured credit card. Maybe you don't have ITR or income documents. Maybe all your previous credit card applications were rejected.

With a secured credit card, you can build a good credit record, so you can apply for a regular credit card after a few years.

How much should you deposit to qualify for a secured credit card?

Savings account -- Minimum is 15,000 pesos

Time Deposit -- Minimum is 100,000 pesos

Can you withdraw your money or part of your money after you get your credit card?
No. The bank will hold your money for security. Your money is your collateral. It will be used to pay your credit card debt in case you're not able to pay off your debt.

Of course you can get back your money later on when you decide to surrender your credit card.

Does your savings account or time deposit earn interest while you're using your credit card?
Yes

Does the secured credit card enjoy promotions and discounts and earn points just like regular credit cards?
Yes

Requirements:

 - You're at least 21 and not older than 65
 - You have a residence or business landline number
 - You have a valid government photo ID

Documents to fill out and sign:

  1. Application Form
